Thousand Oaks, Ventura County
The Chumash lived in the Conejo Valley for thousands of years before Thousand Oaks existed. The Chumash Indian Museum in Oakbrook Park and the Satwiwa culture center in Newbury Park both tell that story on land where villages once stood. The Civic Arts Plaza, opened in 1994 beside the 101 freeway, houses city hall and the main performing arts theaters.
